Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is a Taiwanese multinational semiconductor foundry that produces chips for various technology companies worldwide. The project is under construction on 1,129 acres of land near Interstate 17 and Loop 303 that TSMC purchased in December 2020. As of April 2023, the new TSMC semiconductor plant in Arizona is still under construction and has not yet started production. Hiring has also been underway, and the company has about 500 Arizona employees undergoing training in Taiwan, where TSMC is headquartered. The company expected to have more than 2,000 employees working at the Arizona plant by 2023. According to a city of Phoenix, the first phase of the TSMC plant is estimated to have an economic impact of $38 billion over 20 years. Some TSMC employees have moved into newly constructed apartments in a community 10 minutes’ drive from the plant.

In October 2025, Nvidia and TSMC announced the first successfully produced Blackwell wafer produced in the United States at the TSMC plant in Phoenix. Marking a huge milestone, this is the first time that this important chip has been manufactured on US soil. The Blackwell wafer is a critical element in powering the AI demands of the future.
