Currently the Coyotes are playing at Mullett Arena, a 5,000 seat facility that is on Arizona State University’s (ASU) campus.

The New Tempe Arena is proposed on a piece of of city owned land. The city owned land is currently a landfill with hazardous materials that would have to be properly remediated before construction can begin.

The negotiations have been going on for years, and the new Tempe Entertainment District would feature not only the Coyotes 16,000 seat arena, but also hotels, apartments, retail and a theater.

In December 2022, the Tempe City Council approve the NHL’s franchise project. The exact details laid out the development on 46 acres, which has the arena, now two hotels, retail shops, 1,600 apartments and a sports book. Once the arena was completed, the Coyotes would be committed to staying in the location for 30 years on a no-relocation agreement.

The project will go to a special election vote on May 16, 2023 where residents can have their voice heard. Coyotes president Xavier Gutierrez touts, “The Tempe Entertainment District will be a huge win for this community, and we have no doubt that Tempe voters will agree. Our project will turn a landfill into a landmark.”

Critics of the project include Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, who is concerned about the arena and proposed residential and hotel units being in a direct flight path which will cause complaints in the future.
